Geneva – Effective mechanisms to monitor and document abuses against refugees in detention centers were discussed by representatives from the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor and the Protection Division of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), with a particular focus on measures for just trial.
A Euro-Med Monitor team met in Amman with Sarah Avrillaud, ICRC protection division coordinator, Wissam Syriany, delegate, and Bayan Quteishat, legal advisor, who presented on their work in monitoring and documenting conditions in refugee detention centers. The team also explained that the division frequently receives requests for legal aid from vulnerable persons in detention centers and refugee camps, whom it cannot help due its focus only on monitoring and documentation.
The Euro-Med Monitor team expressed their commitment to providing any assistance in ensuring that such persons still have access to necessary legal aid. Since the work of the division does not include advocacy, whether in courts or beyond, in which the Euro-Med Monitor team has extensive experience, the latter proposed to collaborate through exchange of reports and recommendations in launching advocacy and lobbying campaigns to support detainees needing legal aid.
